Greenwood

Learn From the Father of the Civil Rights Movement

The city of Greenwood is home to the recently restored Benjamin E. Mays House Museum. Mays was a preacher, educator, scholar, author and a civil rights activist who made considerable contributions to a shift in the American consciousness regarding race and education. He is often referred to as the “Father of the Civil Rights Movement” and rightfully so, as one of his most notable students was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who revered Mays as his “spiritual mentor” and “intellectual father.”
