The City That Opened Our Eyes
When you think of the various settings of the Civil Rights Movement, the city of Charleston, South Carolina, may not be the first place that comes to mind, despite its long history in our nation’s struggle for equality. But in 2015, the tragedy of the Charleston church massacre drastically changed that and challenged our generation to reflect on the past in an effort to understand, heal and materially alter the conversation about racism in our country.
Other reminders of the Civil Rights movement are reflected in markers across the city that chronicle peaceful protests and the birthplace of the freedom song “We Shall Overcome.”
