Columbia

Tread a Troubled Path to Equality

Like in most Southern states, the path to social justice and equality landed squarely at the seat of government. The state’s capital was home to many peaceful marches and demonstrations to draw attention to laws that supported segregation, Jim Crow, voter intimidation and racial violence. Pivotal moments are captured at the South Carolina State House and at several attractions like the Modjeska Monteith Simkins House.
