    Southern University and A&M College

On March 28, 1960, students from this historically African American university began to protest for equal rights. Inspired by the Greensboro, North Carolina, lunch-counter sit-ins, they began a sit-in movement of their own at the lunch counters at Kress and Sitman’s and the waiting room and lunch counter at the Greyhound Bus Station in Baton Rouge. Students were arrested, jailed and later expelled from Southern. Tours of the campus are available Monday – Thursday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. To request tour reservations, contact subrtours@subr.edu.
